The goal of the Khmer Rouge was to create a Utopian farming society. In order to make this happen they believed that every person should work on farms spread out all through Cambodia. Anyone who opposed of this idea was killed immediately. They targeted a wide range of people. Most of these people were professionals, and members of the upper class. These people were killed immediately as well. They also targeted people who were not of Cambodian descent, or spoke a foreign language. These people consisted of about 25% of the population of Cambodia (Nou). People had no choice than to cooperate with the Khmer Rouge out of fear. These events of evacuation occurred very quick and rapid. People were forced out of their homes, and usually never allowed to return (Yang).
